Kava Latte

Kava Latte

For years I've experienced slump o'clock - usually around 3pm. I'd feel overwhelmed by the need to close my eyes and just fade out for a while and I felt like the only way through was to snack or drink coffee. If I snacked I would usually crash and if I drank coffee, I would struggle to relax and sleep at night but it was the only way I could push through the afternoon. A couple of months ago I experimented with swapping out my slump o'clock coffee with a kava latte and this is what happened...

    • I felt more alert and focussed.
    • My food cravings disappeared.
    • I felt more creative.
    • I felt relaxed and in control about going home and facing ‘suicide hour’ with my little angels 😊

Here's my recipe:

You will need:

  • 25g Pure Noble Kava (either 1/3 cup ground kava or one single serve kava bag) Shop Here
  • 125ml boiling water
  • 250ml cold (tap temp) water
  • 125ml milk of your choice – I used barista oat

Tips:

  • If you want a creamier blend use 250ml Milk and 125ml each of cold and boiling water.
  • Do not use more than 25% boiling liquid as hot water kills the active ingredients (kavalactones) in the kava.
  • Adding milk or anything with a little fat content helps to make the kavalactones more absorbable and effective.

Using ground kava powder and a shaker, blender or bullet.

Combine all the liquids and then add 1/3 cup or 25g kava powder.

Shake or blend for 45 - 60 seconds.

Allow the kava to sit for about 5 minutes and then shake or blend again for about 30 seconds before pouring through a fine strainer or strainer bag.

Using single serve kava bags

Combine all the liquids.

Submerse a 25g kava bag in the liquid and knead well for 60 seconds.

Allow to brew for 5 minutes.

Knead the bag for another 30 seconds.

Squeeze all liquid out and set the bag aside.

Tip

To make your kava latte more fluffy put the strained kava drink back into the shaker, blender or bullet for a few seconds or pour the liquid into a coffee plunger / french press and pump a few times to froth up the latte.

Pour into your favourite mug or glass, sprinkle with a little ground cacao and enjoy.

Malogu - Relax :)
